Are Student Loans Becoming Necessary Evils?

When it comes to getting a college education most people can agree that the costs can be staggering at best. Even the least expensive colleges in the nation can add up over a four or five year period of time creating crippling debt for those who do not qualify for some of the better grant programs of substantial scholarships.

The problem lies in the fact that the parents of most traditional college students make too much money to qualify for the free financial aid that is needs based and very few qualify for the limited number of scholarships that are available to students based on merit. Even among those that qualify competition and fierce and there are no guarantees. Enter the student loan. There are all kinds of student loans and unfortunately with rising costs associated with college attendence and the growing necessity of a college degree for success in this country it is becoming more and more difficult to pay the price that is associated with higher education.

There are three types of loans that are commonly found for college students. They include federal student loans, federal plus loans, and private student loans. Each type of loan has advantages and disadvantages that are unique to that particular loan. Below I will give a little information about each of the loan types and whom they may benefit.

Student loans. There are three different types of student loans: subsidized, unsubsidized, and Perkins loans.

Perkins loans are only available to students who display exceptional financial need. These loans are available at a 5% interest rate and are available to both graduate and undergraduate students. Perkins loans are extended through the university you attend and will be repaid to the university unlike the other types of student loans, which are repaid to the lending agency.

Subsidized student loans are loans in which the interest is deferred until graduation or you cease to be a qualifying student. What this means is that while you are responsible for repaying the loan upon graduation the interest on these loans does not begin to accrue until your begin repayment 6 months after graduation or your cease to be at least a half time student of the university. You must qualify based on your income in order to receive a subsidized student loan. While the needs requirements for these loans isn't as grave as those required in order to receive a Perkins loan you must still qualify.

Unsubsidized student loans do not require qualification on a needs basis. You must be a student and enrolled at least half time in order to receive an unsubsidized student loan. The good news however for those who do not qualify based on needs for other student loan options is that this type of loan is available to all qualifying students regardless of need. The interest on these loans however begins to accrue immediately, which means they can really add up over time.

PLUS loans are loans that are taken out by the parents of students who need the funds in order to cover educational expenses. The maximum amount that can be borrowed is the cost of attendence minus any financial aid awards the student has already received. The repayment on these loans begins 60 days after the loan is dispersed and the repayment period can be up to 10 years.

In order to cover the costs involved in education that go above and beyond what the government recognizes as acceptable college related expenses you can opt to go the route of private student loans rather then relying solely upon federal financial aid for your student loan source. These loans require that you qualify in order to receive them based on your credit rather than your need and must be used for educational purposes only. With these particular loans you really need to make sure you read all the fine print as different companies offer different conditions and different perks. You should really take the time and compare prices and options before taking out a private student loan and this should be done only as a last resort.

Student loans for many can be the difference in attending college and getting the education you are hoping for and not being able to pay the high costs that go along with higher education. For this reason you should treat them with respect and not take them lightly.

Research and studies show that our children are growing fater by the
day. Many families all over America are struggling to keep the weight of
their children within reasonable limits. As a parent, I know that it's
nearly impossible for me to look into the tear-filled eyes of my son and
refuse food.

So, what's the alternative? Studies show that the number one reason for
obesity in children is not junk food and colas. It's actually TV.
Children tend to plop themselves on the sofa and munch away happily when
they are in front of the TV sets. But, once the set is off, their natural
buoyancy will lead the children to do stuff and to move their body. THey will then be diverted from eating.

Recreational after school activities are a must if you feel that your
child is beginning to put on undesirable fat. It is better to begin these
activities as early as possible. The more weight the child gains, the
harder he has to work to shed it. Football, swimming, skating and Karate
are just some activities he can participate in. Structured and disciplined
exercise is possible only when one is put into a formal environment. That
is why an overweight child simply HAS to be put into an after school
program of this kind.

Alternative Energy from the Ocean

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) was conceived of by the French engineer Jacques D'Arsonval in 1881. However, at the time of this writing the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii is home to the only operating experimental OTEC plant on the face of the earth. OTEC is a potential alternative energy source that needs to be funded and explored much more than it presently is. The great hurdle to get over with OTEC implementation on a wide and practically useful level is cost. It is difficult to get the costs down to a reasonable level because of the processes presently utilized to drive OTEC. Ocean thermal energy would be very clean burning and not add pollutants into the air. However, as it presently would need to be set up with our current technologies, OTEC plants would have the capacity for disrupting and perhaps damaging the local environment.

There are three kinds of OTEC.

“Closed Cycle OTEC” uses a low-boiling point liquid such as, for example, propane to act as an intermediate fluid. The OTEC plant pumps the warm sea water into the reaction chamber and boils the intermediate fluid. This results in the intermediate fluid's vapor pushing the turbine of the engine, which thus generates electricity. The vapor is then cooled down by putting in cold sea water.

“Open Cycle OTEC” is not that different from closed cycling, except in the Open Cycle there is no intermediate fluid. The sea water itself is the driver of the turbine engine in this OTEC format. Warm sea water found on the surface of the ocean is turned into a low-pressure vapor under the constraint of a vacuum. The low-pressure vapor is released in a focused area and it has the power to drive the turbine. To cool down the vapor and create desalinated water for human consumption, the deeper ocean's cold waters are added to the vapor after it has generated sufficient electricity.

“Hybrid Cycle OTEC” is really just a theory for the time being. It seeks to describe the way that we could make maximum usage of the thermal energy of the ocean's waters. There are actually two sub-theories to the theory of Hybrid Cycling. The first involves using a closed cycling to generate electricity. This electricity is in turn used to create the vacuum environment needed for open cycling. The second component is the integration of two open cyclings such that twice the amount of desalinated, potable water is created that with just one open cycle.

In addition to being used for producing electricity, a closed cycle OTEC plant can be utilized for treating chemicals. OTEC plants, both open cycling and close cycling kinds, are also able to be utilized for pumping up cold deep sea water which can then be used for refrigeration and air conditioning. Furthermore, during the moderation period when the sea water is surrounding the plant, the enclosed are can be used for mariculture and aquaculture projects such as fish farming. This definitely makes posting advertisements on Craigslist to be worthwhile from a financial standpoint. While the advertisements are free care should be taken to post these advertisements judiciously because although there is financial loss, poor posting can result in a loss of time and resources if it leads to poor profit potential.

Why Craigslist is Free

Although the founder of Craigslist, Craig Newmark, was approached in 1997 about the possibility of running banner advertisements on Craigslist to generate a profit, he made the decision to keep Craigslist as a noncommercial website. Buying Folk Art Paintings

Buying folk art paintings has become a passion of mine. I’ve been looking for them everywhere it seems. I found a bunch of folk art paintings recently and I am having trouble deciding which one to buy.

There was a folk art painting by Rev. Howard Finster that is titled Howard in 1944. This is an all enamel folk art painting that was painted in 1988. The smile on this portrait is very engaging and makes me smile just as big.

I am also really taken by a folk art painting that was painted by painter Bill Dodge in Oct 1962. The title of the painting is First Trolley To Van Nuys. The painting is on board and depicts the center of town with all the people in town. They are in the windows and on the street. The town market, bakery, Hotel Van Nuys, an ice cream parlor and the Wing Lee Laundry are all depicted in vibrant color. The women in the foreground are against the Trolley and their signs say "Ban the Monster" and "Keep Van Nuys rural".

Thomas Chambers is one of America’s foremost folk artists. I found a piece by him that I just don’t like very much. It is a bit austere for my tastes. The subject is a fishing scene with villagers and boats. I don’t think that I will purchase this folk art painting because I just don’t like it.

There was a folk art painting I found called Alligator Fisher that was painted in 1940 that I really like. The blue of the bayou is very calming and the trees give it a very Southern feel. There is a swamp house in the painting and I like this one very much. It reminds me very strongly of Louisiana.

My mother started this passion of mine for folk art paintings. She had a folk art painting by John Roeder in our parlor growing up. I used to spend hours just staring into it. The trees were so relaxing to lose myself in. I have asked her to give me this wonderful folk art painting many times, but she says that I will have to wait until after her funeral!

I found one folk art painting during my journey that I felt sad every time I looked at. The name of the painting is A Letter from My Mother. The look in the girl’s face is so serious and sad. I have no idea where this folk art painting should hang. The painting itself is magnificent; it just makes me feel sad.

There is a whole subset of folk art paintings that represent black Americana. I don’t usually buy any of these pieces as they don’t speak to my experience. I did find one piece that I purchased for a collector friend of mine that loves this type of art. The folk art painting had a whimsical feel to it and a woman relaxing in a hammock. He hung this in his hallway and has loved it for a long time.

My brother likes folk art paintings as much as I do. He prefers animals to be the subjects of paintings he purchases. I found a lovely clouded leopard folk art painting for him last Christmas and he has asked that I keep my eyes open for more like it. He said that he will buy any art I find for him because he trusts that I know and understand his tastes.

I have kept my eyes open for animal themed folk art paintings for my brother, but I just can’t seem to find any as nice as the leopard that I got for him. The grand extent of animal themed folk art paintings I’ve found recently was a painting of two owls on a limb and I know that he would not like it. Ever since we were kids, owls totally freak him out.

Alternative Energy for the Home

The trend toward homes that are powered by alternative energy sources, ranging from wind turbines and solar collection cells to hydrogen fuel cells and biomass gases, is one that needs to continue into the 21st century and beyond. We have great need of becoming more energy independent, and not having to rely on the supplying of fossil fuels from unstable nations who are often hostile to us and our interests. But even beyond this factor, we as individuals need to get “off the grid” and also stop having to be so reliant on government-lobbying giant oil corporations who, while they are not really involved in any covert conspiracy, nevertheless have a stranglehold on people when it comes to heating their homes (and if not through oil, then heat usually supplied by grid-driven electricity, another stranglehold).

As Remi Wilkinson, Senior Analyst with Carbon Free, puts it, inevitably, the growth of distributed generation will lead to the restructuring of the retail electricity market and the generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure. The power providers may have to diversify their business to make up for revenues lost through household energy microgeneration. She is referring to the conclusions by a group of UK analysts, herself included among them, who call themselves Carbon Free. Carbon Free has been studying the ever-growing trend toward alternative energy-using homes in England and the West. This trend is being driven by ever-more government recommendation and sometimes backing of alternative energy research and development, the rising cost of oil and other fossil fuels, concern about environmental degradation, and desires to be energy independent. Carbon Free concludes that, assuming traditional energy prices remain at their current level or rise, microgeneration (meeting all of one's home's energy needs by installing alternative energy technology such as solar panels or wind turbines) will become to home energy supply what the Internet became to home communications and data gathering, and eventually this will have deep effects on the businesses of the existing energy supply companies.

Carbon Free's analyses also show that energy companies themselves have jumped in on the game and seek to leverage microgeneration to their own advantage for opening up new markets for themselves. Carbon Free cites the example of electricity companies (in the UK) reporting that they are seriously researching and developing ideas for new geothermal energy facilities, as these companies see geothermal energy production as a highly profitable wave of the future.

Another conclusion of Carbon Free is that solar energy hot water heating technology is an efficient technology for reducing home water heating costs in the long run, although it is initially quite expensive to install.

However, solar power is not yet cost-effective for corporations, as they require too much in the way of specialized plumbing to implement solar energy hot water heating. Lastly, Carbon Free tells us that installing wind turbines is an efficient way of reducing home electricity costs, while also being more independent.

However, again this is initially a very expensive thing to have installed, and companies would do well to begin slashing their prices on these devices or they could find themselves losing market share.

From the first moment the infant is applied to the breast, it must be nursed upon a certain plan. This is necessary to the well-doing of the child, and will contribute essentially to preserve the health of the parent, who will thus be rendered a good nurse, and her duty at the same time will become a pleasure.

This implies, however, a careful attention on the part of the mother to her own health; for that of her child is essentially dependent upon it. Healthy, nourishing, and digestible milk can be procured only from a healthy parent; and it is against common sense to expect that, if a mother impairs her health and digestion by improper diet, neglect of exercise, and impure air, she can, nevertheless, provide as wholesome and uncontaminated a fluid for her child, as if she were diligently attentive to these important points. Every instance of indisposition in the nurse is liable to affect the infant.

And this leads me to observe, that it is a common mistake to suppose that, because a woman is nursing, she ought therefore to live very fully, and to add an allowance of wine, porter, or other fermented liquor, to her usual diet. The only result of this plan is, to cause an unnatural degree of fulness in the system, which places the nurse on the brink of disease, and which of itself frequently puts a stop to the secretion of the milk, instead of increasing it. The right plan of proceeding is plain enough; only let attention be paid to the ordinary laws of health, and the mother, if she have a sound constitution, will make a better nurse than by any foolish deviation founded on ignorance and caprice.

The following case proves the correctness of this statement:

A young lady, confined with her first child, left the lying-in room at the expiration of the third week, a good nurse, and in perfect health. She had had some slight trouble with her nipples, but this was soon overcome.

The porter system was now commenced, and from a pint to a pint and a half of this beverage was taken in the four and twenty hours. This was resorted to, not because there was any deficiency in the supply of milk, for it was ample, and the infant thriving upon it; but because, having become a nurse, she was told that it was usual and necessary, and that without it her milk and strength would ere long fail.

After this plan had been followed for a few days, the mother became drowsy and disposed to sleep in the daytime; and headach, thirst, a hot skin, in fact, fever supervened; the milk diminished in quantity, and, for the first time, the stomach and bowels of the infant became disordered. The porter was ordered to be left off; remedial measures were prescribed; and all symptoms, both in parent and child, were after a while removed, and health restored.

Having been accustomed, prior to becoming a mother, to take a glass or two of wine, and occasionally a tumbler of table beer, she was advised to follow precisely her former dietetic plan, but with the addition of half a pint of barley-milk morning and night. Both parent and child continued in excellent health during the remaining period of suckling, and the latter did not taste artificial food until the ninth month, the parent's milk being all-sufficient for its wants.

No one can doubt that the porter was in this case the source of the mischief. The patient had gone into the lying-in-room in full health, had had a good time, and came out from her chamber (comparatively) as strong as she entered it. Her constitution had not been previously worn down by repeated child-bearing and nursing, she had an ample supply of milk, and was fully capable, therefore, of performing the duties which now devolved upon her, without resorting to any unusual stimulant or support. Her previous habits were totally at variance with the plan which was adopted; her system became too full, disease was produced, and the result experienced was nothing more than what might be expected.

The plan to be followed for the first six months. Until the breast- milk is fully established, which may not be until the second or third day subsequent to delivery (almost invariably so in a first confinement), the infant must be fed upon a little thin gruel, or upon one third water and two thirds milk, sweetened with loaf sugar.

After this time it must obtain its nourishment from the breast alone, and for a week or ten days the appetite of the infant must be the mother's guide, as to the frequency in offering the breast. The stomach at birth is feeble, and as yet unaccustomed to food; its wants, therefore, are easily satisfied, but they are frequently renewed. An interval, however, sufficient for digesting the little swallowed, is obtained before the appetite again revives, and a fresh supply is demanded.

At the expiration of a week or so it is essentially necessary, and with some children this may be done with safety from the first day of suckling, to nurse the infant at regular intervals of three or four hours, day and night. This allows sufficient time for each meal to be digested, and tends to keep the bowels of the child in order. Such regularity, moreover, will do much to obviate fretfulness, and that constant cry, which seems as if it could be allayed only by constantly putting the child to the breast. A young mother very frequently runs into a serious error in this particular, considering every expression of uneasiness as an indication of appetite, and whenever the infant cries offering it the breast, although ten minutes may not have elapsed since its last meal. This is an injurious and even dangerous practice, for, by overloading the stomach, the food remains undigested, the child's bowels are always out of order, it soon becomes restless and feverish, and is, perhaps, eventually lost; when, by simply attending to the above rules of nursing, the infant might have become healthy and vigorous.

For the same reason, the infant that sleeps with its parent must not be allowed to have the nipple remaining in its mouth all night. If nursed as suggested, it will be found to awaken, as the hour for its meal approaches, with great regularity. In reference to night-nursing, I would suggest suckling the babe as late as ten o'clock p. m., and not putting it to the breast again until five o'clock the next morning. Many mothers have adopted this hint, with great advantage to their own health, and without the slightest detriment to that of the child. With the latter it soon becomes a habit; to induce it, however, it must be taught early.

The foregoing plan, and without variation, must be pursued to the sixth month.

After the sixth month to the time of weaning, if the parent has a large supply of good and nourishing milk, and her child is healthy and evidently flourishing upon it, no change in its diet ought to be made. If otherwise, however, (and this will but too frequently be the case, even before the sixth month) the child may be fed twice in the course of the day, and that kind of food chosen which, after a little trial, is found to agree best.

diesel fuel is obviously cheaper to buy. Gas is
in supply more, which means that you can find
it almost anywhere. If you own a gasoline
vehicle, you obviously don't want to put diesel
in it. If you own a diesel vehicle, then you

The mass media is in the business of trying to get
attention. They get it through sensationalism. Their weapon
of choice is the headline. If they don't get your
attention, they lose ad dollars.

To get your attention they take extreme examples and make
you think they are common. They manufacture crisises. Do
you ever stop and think: Is this really a crisis or normal
life? Is this problem really that pervasive or very
limited? Where are the facts? Are these facts a fair and
balanced representation of the event deemed a crisis?

Even if it is a crisis, what good does it do if I get all
hyped up by it? Can I do anything?

I know many gullible souls, ah bless 'em, who are
continually talking about the latest crisis. Yet, they
never do anything about it. They are NEVER impacted by the
so called crisis, itself, but merely by the TALK of it. So,
what was the point of getting all worked up and bent out of
shape? I guess deep down, they dig feeling like there is a
crisis and someone has it worse than them.

Crisis talk is something you should puy in the "purely
enteratainment" category. Never take it seriously. Even if
it is a crisis, who can say what it will lead to? The media
doesn't have a crystal ball. They are clueless about the
future.

In fact, the moment they are most adamant that it's just
the tip of the iceberg and the future will be bleak, we
have hit the apex of the crisis and shortly after, it
passes. They just drop it and distance themselves from the
hype. In time people forgot that "last time they hyped
something it never came to pass".

If only people would keep a journal. "Xyz crisis: Earth to
fall out of orbit". Follow up: Never happened. "Abc crisis:
Sun to disappear". Follow up: Never happened.

Guess what would happen if you kept a diary of all these
supposed crisises? You'd have the GAME all figured out and
the next crisis you would greet with a smile.

Is the end near? Is a major catastrophe in the cards?
Possibly, but it's NOT the one they predict. They NEVER
predict events that actually do occur.

"Trustworthy insider says that the U.S. will strike Iran in
days"? I have heard that for years. Wrong, wrong, wrong,
wrong. Just the other day I read a headline saying that the
U.S. was planning an attack on Iran and had "picked up to
2,000 targets".

Say this is true (for a change). They are making something
of nothing. The military, just as businesses, engages in
"contingency planning". Preparation for possible scenarios
is actually a wise thing. It is NOTHING NEW. They have done
that since day one. Should the military instead sit around
and play poker? Big surprise: The military plans military
attacks. Next thing you know they'll report "Evil karate
expert plans for possible attacks."

"Terrorists will strike with a dirty nuclear bomb".

You have incredibly low odds of ever being a victim of
terroism. You had better put your focus on driving,
instead, as your odds of getting into a car accident are
significantly greater than being killed by a terrorist.

Your fellow citizen is a far bigger threat to your being
than some wacko in a distant cave.

"New cancer drug holds promise", etc., etc. Yada, yada. Why
don't they just shut their traps and stop giving people
false hope? I can't imagine one person who benefits from
constantly having the hope rug pulled out from under him.
Just keep quiet until the cure is official!

Why don't they?

It's simple: It's called filler! They would be out of jobs
were it not for the strategy of hype spewing.

And, fine, they can spew hype. BUT, just don't take it to
heart. It's just entertainment. So long as you never
forget: It's hype. And hype is for entertainment purposes
only.

Look. The truth is: When there is a cure for something you
will find out without ever reading a line of type. It'll be
everywhere. Just like with Advil.

The best thing to do is ignore predictions and adjust to
outcomes (99.99% of the predictions will never come to
pass).

The media has a LOUSY batting average - and there's ZERO
accountability. No one tracks all these predictions and
follows up with them. When a politician makes a promise or
prediction but doesn't keep it, the media is all over them.
BUT, when the media does it... no problem, they get off
scott free.

We need a news source that tracks the media's predictions.

*** Never be influenced by crisis talk. And forget dire
predictions. Over and over again I have heard doom and
gloom predictions and never have they come to pass. Never
will they. Or, when they do, there'll be nothing we can do
about it.

The ONLY crisises I have to worry about are the ONES I
create or the ones perpetrated on me by fellow citizens or
father time.

Put your attention on yourself, your family and those you
come in contact with. That's your jurisdiction. The rest?
You can't do squat about it. For things outside his sphere
of influence, all the efforts of the common man are as
inconsequential as a grain of sand in the Sahara.

You want to hear about a REAL crisis?

Aging is the TRUE crisis and no one is doing anything about
it. Despite all the hype about medical advances, people
still look old, and frankly, they look awful (wrinkled,
bald, etc.). And, they aint stopping the clock from
ticking.

They make a big deal out of the fact that people now live a
bit longer than 20 years ago! Big whoop: Another year with
bad hearing, senility, wrinkles, balding, lack of energy,
pets dying, friends dying, family members dying, regrets,
2nd guessing, longing for youth and the past, diseases,
etc.

And, death, there's a REAL CRISIS and they can't do squat
about it.

That's how it is: The only crisis affecting us directly,
they don't mention, and can't do jack about it.

middle class neighborhood or residential area on the weekend, and
you're sure to spot at least a half dozen garage sales.

What's being sold at these garage sales? The accumulated "junk"
people no longer use or want taking up space in or around their
homes. Are they making any money with these garage sales? You'd
better believe they're making money! It's not at all uncommon to
make $600 with a weekend garage sale. It is hard to put on a
profitable garage sale? Well, yes and no. It really does take
some of your time, and also requires an awareness of a few
merchandising tactics. But the problem in running a successful
garage sale are small in comparison to the profits.

Who are the buyers, and how do you get them to come to your
garage sale? Your customers are going to be "everybody," and you
get them over to your garage with a little bit of advertising and
promotion.

Let's look at the background: Everybody accumulates the kind of
garage sale items that other people are searching for, and are
willing to buy. These items range from no longer wanted or
outgrown items of clothing, to furniture, tools, knick-knacks,
books, pictures and toys. Many garage sale items are objects of
merchandise purchased on impulse, and later found to be not what
the buyer wanted. He discovered too late that he really didn't
have a use for it, or he no longer has a need for it. Many items
found at garage sales are gifts that have been given to the
seller, but are the wrong size or incorrect choice for the
recipient.

The problem wit most people is that they haven't the time to
gather up all the items "just taking up space" in and around
their homes and staging a garage sale to get rid of them. Many
people don't know how to stage a garage sale, and many other
people feel that putting on a garage sale is just too much bother
and work.

This is where you enter the picture. Your enterprise will be an
ongoing garage sale of items donated and collected from these
people who lack the inclination to put on a garage sales of their
own.

Step one is education: Spend a few weeks visiting all the garage
sales, swap meets and flea markets in your area. Find out what's
being offered for sale, what people are buying, and how the
merchandise is being sold. generally an item is tagged with a
price, but the seller is open to almost any reasonable offer from
the customer. Another thing you want to make a mental not of is
the way the merchandise is displayed and how the customers are
allowed to browse.

You start your own garage sale by cleaning out your basement,

potential customers, "shows them around,"and generally engages
them in conversation. If it's a woman staging the garage sale,
then arrangements should be made to have another woman "mind the
store" while she's out digging up more items for sale.

The advertising angle is really quite simple, and shouldn't cost
very much either. You should run an ad in your area shopper's
newspaper for about three days in advance of, and up through the
day of your sale. Once you're operating on a full-time , every
day of the week schedule, you'll want to change your ad schedule
and the style of your advertising. But in getting started, go
with small classified ads simply announcing your garage sale,
emphasizing that you've got something of interest to
everyone--everything form A to Z. To get ideas on how to write
your ad, check your newspaper for a week or so; cut out all the
garage sale ads you can find; paste them up on a piece of paper.
Then, with a bit of critical analysis, you'll be able to
determine how to write a good ad of your own by determining the
good and bad in the ads you've collected. Something to remember:
The bigger and better you sale, the bigger and better your
"getting started" ads should be. And the secret to outstanding
garage sale profits is in having the widest or largest selection
of merchandise.

You should have made an old-fashioned "sandwich board" sign to
display in front of your house when your garage sale is open for
business. This will pull in your neighbors, if you haven't
already informed them, and attract the people driving by.
Sandwich boards are sometimes set out at key traffic
intersections nor far from the site of the garage sale, to
attract attention and point the way. (Check local ordinances to
see if this is permitted in your area.)

Another "sign idea" practiced by a few sharp operators is the old
"Burma Shave" roadside pointers. Here, you simply take a few

to more than six or seven dollars.

If you make this "circular/poster" up with versatility and
long-time usage in mid, you can use it over and over again,
simply by pasting a new date. In case you were puzzled when we
talk about "pasting" this is simply pasting another piece of
paper on to the overall page. Say you have a circular with a date
of Wednesday March 1st, and you want it to read Thursday, July
16th. Rather than do the whole thing over, simply write out the
new date with your transfer letters on a separate sheet of paper,
cut it out to fit in the space occupied by the old date, and
paste the new date over the old date. A good paste to use for
this purpose is rubber cement. That's all there is to it; the
printer does the rest.

Now let's talk about the 'insider secrets" of drawing people into
your sale, and merchandising "gimmicks' that will result in the
maximum sales and profit for you. First,
call attention to your sale. Don't be shy, bashful, or
self-conscious about letting everybody for miles about know that
you're having a garage sale. Some sharp operators do the next
best thing to having the Goodyear blimp overhead: They rent
miniature blimps, send them up above the housetops, and tether
them there on their sale days. Of course this giant balloon or
miniature blimp has some sort of sign on the side of it, inviting
people to the garage sale! this is one of the strongest available
advertising ideas for pulling "traffic' to a sale of any kind.

"rack jobbers" in the stores in your area. These are the wire
racks that usually hold card packaged items. This kind of display
rack would lend itself beautifully for anchoring a cluster of
balloons. Keep these things in mind, and build your individual
displays as part of the whole; make it pleasing to the eye as
well as convenient for your customers to browse through and
select the items that appeal to them.

Look for some kind of interesting and unusual item to call
attention to your sale--something you can set up or park in front
of your house during your sale. Some of the displays we've seen
along these lines include a horse-drawn surrey, a restored Model
T, and old farm plow. But anything of an unusual and interesting
nature will do the trick for you. One couple we know put up a
display using a manikin dressed in an old time farm bonnet, long
dress and apron. The display depicted a farm woman of old,
washing clothes with a scrub board and two steel wash tubs. You
have to believe this drew crowds and made people talk!

Wherever your imagination takes you, you have to be different and
distinctive, or you'll get lost in the hundreds of garage sales
going on all around you. If you'll take the time to employ a bit
of imagination and set your sales up with the kind of flair we've
been talking about, you'll not just draw the crowds, you'll end
up being the one holding the most profits.

It's almost a compulsion of many women to go shopping, to search
for the interesting and sometimes rare and valuable items. This
fact will keep you as busy as you'll ever want to be--staging and
holding garage sales. The market is so vast, and the appetite so

For people who would like to do more gardening but live in a short growing season area, a hobby greenhouse is the answer. A hobby greenhouse is not large enough to produce vegetables or flowers on a commercial basis. It will, however, give you a place for a tomato plant or two and some fresh greens even if you live in the northern regions. Greenhouse enthusiasts even have their own association, called the Hobby Greenhouse Association, which publishes a quarterly magazine. The organization also sponsers events and helps individuals connect to get help with the aspect of gardening that they are interested in, whether it's growing cacti or saving seeds.

If you are in the market for a hobby greenhouse, there are several types on the market. The smallest type is not large enough to walk into and must be accessed from the outside. It resembles an old-fashioned phone booth made all of glass and outfitted with shelves. This type is designed to fit as many plants as possible in as small a place as possible. The shelves are made of glass to allow as much light as possible to reach plants on the lower shelves. Another inexpensive version of this sort of hobby greenhouse is shelving covered with a zippered tent of clear plastic. This sort of arrangement is great for the small-scale hobby gardener wanting a place to keep her flowers or houseplant starts.

There are a variety of designs of hobby greenhouse that are large enough to walk into but made entirely of clear glass or plastic. They are often about the same size as a small storage building. Some independent builders have started making these to sell locally. Among national brands, one of the nicest is called the "Solar Prism." It is called this because of it's unique construction. This hobby greenhouse is made of a single piece of durable clear plastic which is designed to work like tiny prisms side by side. They trap the rays of the sun and shoot them back into the greenhouse at all angles. For this reason, these little greenhouses are said to glow when the weather is cloudy.

Better hobby greenhouses are equipped with automatic sensors that open vents which allow ventilation and keep the interior temperatures from getting too high. These are a great labor saver, but can get expensive. Another benefit sometimes found in nicer greenhouses is a built in irrigation or misting system. Members of the Hobby Greenhouse Association, or HGA, have invented many interesting designs of greenhouses.

If gardening is your hobby, greenhouse growing will interest you. With a greenhouse, you can have the earliest tomatoes and salad greens all year. You can also start seedlings for the main garden early in the spring when outdoor temperatures would kill them. A hobby greenhouse can be a good investment.
